I agree Karen. Your Mom knew she didn’t want to leave on his birthday. How so sweet and loving of her to wait. It may not always be possible, but I’m happy in her case she could do that for him.

When my mom was in her last days, in June of 2012, in addition to all my other worries at the thought of losing her, I was so afraid that she might die on my son’s 12th birthday. Brian and his grandma were especially close, and he was so young. If knew it would mark his birthday with sadness for the rest of his life.
But, I also knew my mom. She held on day after day. Finally, on the 20th, my husband and I took the time to get Brian and his sister out for a (subdued) birthday celebration. That afternoon I went back to the hospice facility, knowing what I had to do.
After days in and out of consciousness, I found my mom sitting in a wheelchair in her room. She hadn’t spoken in days, but I talked to her anyway, loved on her. Then, as painful as it was because I knew what would happen, I kneeled next to her and said, “Mom, today is Brian’s birthday.” She nodded, weakly, and said, “Tell him I said happy birthday.” The next day, she began actively dying and passed on June 22.
It was, I’m certain, her last act of love.
